Cost * Log homes can potentially be built faster and potentially at a lower total construction cost than standard homes. Because log exterior walls can also double as interior walls, you can save the time and costs associated with certain framing, brickwork, insulation, drywall, and painting. Many Alabama log homes have been built with Lincoln brand logs for a total cost of $80-$95 per sq foot, depending on customer preferences. (This figure even includes basic appliances.) With big corporate log home companies and many conventional home builders now charging $110-130 per sq foot, owners can have the benefits of a log home at a lower cost. Maintenace costs can also be less than a home with painted siding because there is little need to remove old layers of paint.
NOTE: If you've heard "shocking" cost estimates to build a log home, then it is either because: (A) You were talking to a conventional home builder, (B) You spoke with a log home owner who drove up the overall project cost with expensive options that are totally unrelated to log construction, or (C) You spoke to the wrong log home dealer, builder, or supplier. Although, log homes constructed with cedar are more expensive than other log homes, anyone who can afford cedar will likely say it was worth it to pay more. Even using cedar, the team of professionals with whom I work can still beat almost any other cedar log home quote you might secure.
Durability * Many log homes withstood Hurricane Katrina -- in areas where others homes were lost. If we meet, ask me to show you the photographic evidence of this fact.
Energy efficiency * Logs are more energy efficient than bricks, cement, or siding. Let’s all forget about “R-Values”. There is something more effective called "THERMAL MASS", and logs have an abundance of it. It's all about the incredible number of tiny air pockets found in wood of all types. These pockets actually serve to trap warm air in the winter. Studies from as far back as the early 1980's show that log construction is more energy efficient than frame house construction. For hard evidence of this effect, talk to log home owners. Most will boast of low utility bills.
Beauty * My family has been in the timber business for over 100 years, and I believe that good wood, whether part of the home or still growing in the open, is a form of art. (See the interior photographs below for more proof.) Truly, there's nothing like being surrounded by the art of nature -- right in your own living room.
